Okay friends, you will laugh at this one. I have ALWAYS had a huge problem with being tardy for class, skipping class or doing things that may get me in trouble. Heck, I have a hard time going to do something fun when I know I have homework. Tyson still gives me a hard time about refusing to go snowboarding one Saturday during our senior year because I had to work on my senior research paper.
With that said, let me tell you about work today. I am lucky enough to work with great people who have become really good friends. Debbie Texeira is the science teacher that I work with and she had become one of my greatest friends. She is very care free and always up for adventure.
This morning we were all talking when one of our other teacher friends sticks her head out in the hall and says, "Beyond Glaze has a coupon online for 50% off." Spencer, the English teacher we work with) said, "Let's go get donuts!" We have first period prep so it would be really easy to just go. I should also add that on Thursdays and Fridays we have A and B days so the classes are about 90 minutes long. Spencer said he could not go get the donuts so Debbie volunteered us. What!?! I can't leave work? That is like sluffing school.
She kept trying to talk me into it but I just kept getting more stressed out. My heart rate was getting faster and faster the more we talked about it. I was thinking of all the ways that we would get in trouble and imagining a member of the administration coming to talk to me and finding we were gone. So Debbie called to ask the secretary for permission - perfect. She said that it was fine and she would just take note that we were gone.
With the go ahead from the secretary I felt better about it. That was until we started to walk toward the stairs. Our principal was standing at the base of the stairs just making sure that kids were getting to class. I froze! There I was with my purse and coat on standing frozen at the top of the stairs. What could I tell Travis that would explain why Debbie and I just happened to have our coats and purses on while heading directly toward the front door of the school?
My heart started pounding and I just stood there. I began talking to one of the ladies from the office to act as a decoy. I was hoping that Travis (our principal) wouldn't notice me or my coat. Meanwhile, Debbie headed on down the stairs and talked to Travis. Eventually Travis looked up the stairs at me and started laughing. Debbie yelled up to me, "Don't worry Christie, he knows we are going to get donuts." He laughed and laughed at me. He told us that we just had to bring a donut for him.
So with that, we were off - but I still felt guilty. While we were driving I just had to call Arturo and tell him of my daring donut run. He laughed and later sent me a text saying, "So how are the donuts? Do they taste like rebellion?" Love it.
I couldn't do it in high school and it appears that I can't do it even now. It sure is a good thing I have a spontaneous husband and friends. This reminds me of something that my dad says. (I must say that he usually uses this when talking about my brother Eric and him being a tight-wad.) He would have said "You're as tight as a duck's butt." Not a direct connection, but it came to mind. Love it.
P.S. Aren't those fancy donuts? They are pretty impressive.
